United Inch is a framing term used to price picture framing. It is the displayable length plus width of the item to be framed. All the prices on my site are based on United Inches. If you have a magazine that is 8 1/8" by 10 7/8", then it is 19 United Inches (or UI). If you have a piece of comic art that is 11"x17" then it is 28 UI. If you cover the margins of the same comic art so that the area to be displayed is 10" x 15.5", then it is 25.5 UI. The price you pay is based on the displayable UI, so for the comic art measured at 28UI, the price for our Reverse Black Mat frame is $86.95. With the margins covered leaving 25.5 UI, the cost of the same frame is $77.95.
I group my frame sizes into 2" UI ranges for pricing and give each a size code as follows:
- Size 0. less than 10 UI"
- Size 1. 10 to 11 15/16 UI"
- Size 2. 12 to 13 15/16 UI"
- Size 3. 14 to 15 15/16 UI"
- Size 4. 16 to 17 15/16 UI"
- Size 5. 18 to 19 15/16 UI"
- Size 6. 20 to 21 15/16 UI"
- Size 7. 22 to 23 15/16 UI"
- Size 8. 24 to 25 15/16 UI"
- Size 9. 26 to 27 15/16 UI"
- Size 10. 28 to 29 15/16 UI"
- Size 11. 30 to 31 15/16 UI"
- Size 12. 32 to 33 15/16 UI"
- Size 13. 34 to 35 15/16 UI"
- Size 14. 36 to 37 15/16 UI"
- Size 15. 38 to 39 15/16 UI"
- Size 16. 40 to 41 15/16 UI"
- Size 17. 42 to 43 15/16 UI"
- Size 18. 44 to 45 15/16 UI"
- Size 19. 46 to 47 15/16 UI"
- Size 20. 48 to 49 15/16 UI"
If you have a magazine that is 9x12", that will be 21 UI and the frame required will be a Size 6, 20 to 21 15/16 UI. You will see the size code in the drop down boxes on the OrderFrame page and the Frames page.
